Subsequent to the 3 in a row of the Galway footballers , Martin Quinn arrived in the car park of Athlone Golf Club in a maroon and white Mini , LIM 314, all the way from Bishop St. in Tuam. He was apprenticed to Christy O’Connor Snr, who was Pro. in Tuam ,before Bundoran purloined his services ,due to his top 20 finish at The Open in Portrush . Martin had a natural swing almost as graceful as “Himself” and his behaviour and demeanour on the fairways of golf and life itself were equally as graceful. The R.T.É. Sports’ commentator Fred Cogley , once memorably described Martin as “one of the most disciplined Pro. golfers“ as he competed in The Irish Open.
Back then the Pro. was an integral part of the Greenkeeping Staff and my brother George and I often did the rounds with Martin on a Sat. eve. to change the holes on the Greens; and boy did he perform this labour of love meticulously? It’s no wonder Martin kept his beloved lawn in pristine condition!
We were very familiar with Madeline because she was our Favourite babysitter, great craic! Martin was lost without Madge!
Martin was a dedicated and patient Teacher who made single figured ,silver swinging golfers out of inter alia , Tom Hynes and Tadgh Mannion 🏌️‍♂️🏌️‍♂️.
Yeah, Martin Quinn made a significant contribution to Putting Athlone Golf Club on the map and helping frustrated golfers overcome the obstacles.
More importantly, Martin Quinn was a very kind and generous man .
We loved him .

Very sorry for your loss Murty and family

I was so sorry to hear from my sister of the recent sad passing of our dear old neighbour and friend from the Demesne. Fond memories of Martin who always seemed to have a smile on his face and a hearty laugh. He was a great friend of my late brother Mattie. When I would visit Quinn's with my mother, on her regular Sunday night visits, Martin's golfing trophies which covered the sideboard, were always a source of wonder to me. May he rest in the peace of the Lord.
