Emmett, Conor and Caoimhe, my sincere sympathy to you all and your families. I stayed with Emmett and Mary for a year while I was teaching in Roscrea. They were both so very kind to me. It makes me sad to think she has left you all and that her recent life has been so difficult.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. I loved her books as a child and even wrote her a couple of fan letters. Years later, I reached out to her for advice on publishing, and she responded with such warmth and generosity. Her kindness and encouragement left a lasting impression on me as a writer. Difficult to express the emotions we feel on the passing of our lifelong friend Mary A. Over 55 years ago we both set out on our married life journey. Sadly Mary's health deteriorated and she lost Emmet, her soul partner. She never got the fur coat that Emmet and i promised from the profits of the tons of books that Fred Melia brought in his lorry shortly after we both married c1971. What a wonderful unique partnership they carved, full of artistic originality, and rearing three wonderful children. Her art, her unique books, her generosity, her sense of fun shone through all her life. Her adored grandchildren were the light of her life. One of the last talks we had was when she told me she had shown one of her grandchildren her artwork for her latest book. 'That's great Granny and you kept within the lines.'
And what of her cartoons which graced over 40 issues of Roscrea People.
Emmett, Conor and Caoimhe your Mam was unique in so many ways. May your loving and lovely memories grant you and her beloved grandchildren some solace as you say goodbye as she joins her beloved Emmet.
