i stayed in Timmy Lynch flat when i came to town in 1980. Mrs. Fergus was the shop i did all my groceries buying. A quiet spoken lady to a young lad miles away from home, a lovely person
Reminded me of home in Belmullet and the small shops my mother went to

I remember being sent down to Mrs Fergus in the nineteen fifties on Christmas eve and it was surely 11.pm at night .......to get above all things a packet of birds jelly to make trifle.
My mother was stuck and Ferguses shop was the only hope or else no trifle.!!for xmas day.
She was a small woman but to an11 year old a formidable character and I had crossed swords with her before when trying to buy loose cigarettes from her and pretending they were for my father ... yes eleven year olds did try to smoke in thise days.
Anyway the bell rang and in a week voice I said "Would you have a packet of birds jelly for trifle please" (now her shop remember was very small a counter maybe twelve feet long.")
Then came the dinstinctive monotone reply "What flavour would you like"

Mrs Ferguses shop never closed and it had everything..from washing powder to Birds jelly in all its six flavours.

I have extended my condolences to the Fergus family personally,and they have been blessed to have a mother, grandmother and great granmother in their lives across the ages.
However, her passing transcends family loss and extends into the fibre of the place in which she lived out her life.
Who , of this place, cannot but recite an experience that has not been marked by such a long life , in even the smallest of ways, delivered from behind a tall counter in a tiny shop .
A number of such people have passed on in the last few years, and this place is the poorer for it.

We all have fond memories of being told "go into the shop and take what'd you'd like" by Aunt Mausie and Uncle Tommy getting us a bike out to ride around town. As we got older we'd help out in the shop and pumping petrol.
