My sincere condolences to all of Mary’s family on their immense loss. I had Miss Hand for four years of secondary school in Cnoc Mhuire Granard. I often thought of Mary in the intervening years as the person who inspired me to become a teacher and to study both Irish and History. I can remember her distinctive handwriting as she prepped us with revision notes for our Leaving Cert. I remember her passion, commitment and genuine interest in her students. Laoch ar lár

I am sad to hear of Mary’s death. Although I haven’t seen her for forty years, I remember her well. She was a good friend of my good friend, Kevin Johnston, and we met regularly in Athlone, along with Marian O’Leary, who is also no longer with us, and others. I remember Mary being always cheery and happy, with her thick lenses glasses. Last time I met Mary was, sadly, at Kevin’s funeral forty years ago. Somehow, her name has always stayed in my memory. I am sad that she has gone. Reading other tributes, many from her past pupils, Mary was a well loved lady. To her family, who I don’t know, I pass my sympathies.
