Dear Keelan family

I want to express my deepest condolences to all of you during this difficult time. The loss of such a wonderful lady—who taught me all the English I know and shared so many precious moments of love and kindness—is truly heartbreaking.

She was more than just a hosting mother to me when I was in Killala; she treated me like a daughter when I was welcomed into her home. Her warmth, generosity, and love have left an everlasting imprint on my heart. I will always cherish the time we spent together and the care she showed me. We had very funny moments at home due to my poor english and she taught me tenderly how to pronounce and use english words properly and, even though, I learnt good manners from her.

Her passing is a great loss, but her spirit and the kindness she shared will live on in all of us who were fortunate enough to know her.

Meeting Mary was a true gift from God, along with meeting rest of family. Although I didn’t have a lot of time with her, her courage and faith and generosity of heart were immediately evident, as she welcomed me and my mammy. I’ll pray for her, and for all the family she’s left behind. May she rest in peace.

Even though we lived most of our own lives in Killala and Dublin, Mary was always the neighbour from across the river in Belderrig, the two families closely bonded since the 1890s by our two Cornish grannies who lived their married lives in Belderrig. I remember warmly so many stories I would tell your mum to shock and entertain her and delight at her shocked reactions. She is such a lovely memory of my teenage years.
