My condolences to Brian, Elaine and Donna, and all May’s family. It was my privilege to first meet May and her parents, Bridgie and Charlie Tom, on visit to Achill, from Chicago, back in the ‘70s. I came to know her much better and much later on repeated visits to Ireland in the early ‘90s. We would always stay for several days at her West End B&B. With only a small box-fridge, May ran her B&B with the kind of efficiency, hospitality and welcome that a four-star hotel could only envy. She made hard work pleasant and rewarding. Knowing May, and her mother and father, and receiving such a kind and friendly welcome on those visits from America were, no doubt, a significant contribution to my permanent move to Ireland almost 30 years ago. Throughout those years on my many visits from Kerry, our friendship, seeded in extended family, then blossomed in more of May’s welcome, generosity, hospitality, and her smiling, on-the-go vivacity. I once worked with an Achill man in Dublin who recalled May as “a pretty blonde who loved to dance.” And May was a carer. She cared for her father, her mother and her Aunt Cathy when she returned home after more than 40 years in Canada and America. My prayers are with May and her family. She was uniquely special, and will be missed. God bless her.

Brian, Elaine and Donna, I was so sorry to hear of May’s passing. She was such a kind-hearted woman to my family and I while making trips to Achill. I made my first trip to Achill when I was 17 with my Mom and Dad Mary and Tom O’Malley back in 1977. I will always remember how welcomed we were and May’s beautiful smile. My Mom made numerous trips back to Achill and loved every second of her time spending it with your family. My brother Tom who lives in Dingle would visit Achill and always talked kindly of the McNeill family. We will keep May and your family in our daily prayers.
