Thinking of you and your family John.

I have lovely memories of seeing Johnny walking past the boat slip en route to the pool at around 3.30pm every day. Mary would arrive about an hour later by car. We would always have a good chat about politics, water safety or canoes and then they would have their swim.

They were both such genuinely nice and kind people and legends in the history of Bagenalstown Swimming Pool. I hope in your sadness you take solace from how well regarded they were and the positive impact they had on the many young people they interacted with at the pool. Many of us in Bagenalstown owe a debt of gratitude to the McNally family for teaching us to swim, be lifeguards or swim teachers and keeping us out of trouble every summer.

I’m very sorry to hear of Mary’s death. I’ve lovely memories of her from swimming pool days with Bernie. I clearly remember her lovely flowery swim hat- she had a great sense of style and was always cheerful and positive. I heard she was driving in Leighlinbridge only last Sunday and am glad she was independent and social right to the end.
