Mary was a woman of great talent and intelligence. Born into the Travelling community, life was not always easy for her but she rose above all adversities to become an activist on the national and international platforms.
Was she the first Travelling woman to speak on behalf of her community in Europe?
I had the privilege of interviewing her for Women Who Dared 3 and discovered that she was really an accidental activist and an incidental nurse. Apologies for borrowing from her story but I think it is worthwhile:
Mary: “When in London, I was coming home from work one night ... and saw a woman sitting with three or four children. It was snowing and the woman had a two-year-old in her arms and was expecting. I heard the child saying ‘I’m hungry’.
“I said ‘Are you all right, mam?’ She said, ‘My husband was jailed for tax and insurance; my brother was to meet me here and I’m waiting here all day [Camden Road]’. I said ‘come on … over to the chip shop’ and I got her food and hot milk for the baby. Then it hit me. You might pass and do nothing, or you could do something."
And the accidental activist emerged …
She was full of wisdom as we see in her message for WWD: "Treat people as you would like to be treated. If someone insults you, turn to them and say ‘Happy Christmas to you too.’
My deepest sympathy to Mary's daughter, sons and extended Moriarty and Warde families. She was an exceptional woman who will be missed greatly.
