To All the Nugent Family
I received the sad news of Mary’s passing from my sister Maug on Saturday last. Maug had just arrived in Kilkee with her husband Pat for yet another holiday in the Yellow Brick House across the road from what we affectionately referred to as ‘Mary’s House’.
I remember it well when our family was warmly welcomed as neighbours into the Yellow Brick House by Mary and Jimmy back in 1995 or thereabouts. We were true blow-ins with some of us coming from Dublin, some from Kildare, and one of us from the good old USA.
Mary was a wonderful neighbour. Always available. Plus, she kept a close eye on the house during our long absences. It was such a comfort to know she was there.
I remember fondly many’s the long chat I had with Mary whenever I spent time at the Yellow Brick House. But for the life of me I could never get her to stay long enough for a cup of tea. I think she felt she didn’t want to intrude. She was that type of person, very considerate.
Sadly, I cannot join you in person for the funeral mass on Tuesday. I had surgery on my spine some weeks ago and there were complications that I continue to wrestle with. I’m still in the process of learning to walk again. So, travel is out of the question.
