Mary O'Connell Browne

My deepest sympathies to Cal, Michael and all the extended O'Connell family on the sad passing of their beloved Mary. May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace. Mary taught me in infants in Cloneyharp NS many moons ago. She was both a beautiful person and a wonderful teacher. As someone put it so aptly, she was like the ray of warm summer sunshine following a harsh winter. She was mam's much valued colleague and they stayed in contact through many years. I have fond memories of visiting Mary with mam in Passage West and loved the lilt of her melodious voice. Mary and I renewed contact in the latter years when mam no longer could write to her. We had some lovely texts and bonded over our love of border collies. It was with a very heavy heart I discovered Mary had passed and I am saddened I didn't get to don my bright colours to say a last farewell. May the many treasured memories of a lifetime shared sustain and comfort you all at this difficult time. Sincere condolences to Mary's family. I only heard of her passing at the Alpine & Hardy Plants Society lecture last Thursday evening. Ken delivered a heartwarming tribute to her. She will be greatly missed by her friends in gardening circles.

Her generosity of spirit and willingness to use her many talents for the good of the school has left a lasting impact on the school. Her presence is still with us in the trees she planted that continue to flourish in our school garden.

I have so many wonderful memories of times shared with Mary. She, with Elizabeth were my first teaching colleagues when I arrived at TGNS. What an amazing mentor she was. She worked tirelessly for the school community and in her final years with us was a much beloved Learning Support teacher whose experience and caring nature enhanced all who had the honour to know her.
Mary was so generous with her time and talents. She shared her love of classical music with both teachers and students. One very fond memory was supporting Mary in preparing a most talented group of students for a Cór Fhéile performance of HMS Pinafore. It is a night I still remember with such love and pride. I fondly remember her music literacy lessons conducted over the school intercom. She had such a passion for education that went beyond the academic.
Mary's presence is still felt and seen in TGNS. Her trees first planted decades ago still flourish to this day. Mary was an exceptional person, gentle, caring but with a wonderful sense of humour.

So sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. A lovely warm- hearted and fun lady, we spent many a day in our and her garden. She knew so much about plants and her plantsmanship was renowned. May she RIP. Condolences to all her family members.
