Mary O'Grady

So sad to hear of the passing of Mary. Mum and Mary were great friends and great neighbours. During COVID when Betty was in Cobh Hospital, Marys letters were a god send to her. They had all the news and were very witty. Together they spent hours talking about their gardens. She was a lady and very interesting to talk to. May she rest in peace.

Mrs. O’Grady (I never learned to call her Mary) was a marvellously unique person. It was always a great pleasure to meet her. She was so kind, and so knowledgeable and interesting! Conversation with her never lacked for things to talk about. When I was growing up in Cobh, she always made us teenagers welcome at the O’Grady home, whether we encountered her in the garden or the kitchen or the living room. In later life, my wife Jeanne and I were luckily able to keep our relationship with her active throughout the years. It was truly wonderful to know her. She was very special — though I’m sure she would not have thought this of herself. Thank God her family were blessed with her for so many years. We send them our sincere condolences.

Your mother was one of my husband’s (Tom Meagher) very favourite people. He visited whenever we were back in Cobh and so admired her warmth, wisdom and enviable curiosity in all that was happening in the world. However, her main focus was always her family.

I am so sorry for your loss and send my best wishes to you all. You have lost a very special person.
