MARY O'MAHONY

Sending love and strength to Roisin, Cian, Caitriona, Eoin, Barry, and Mary’s extended family and friends in this desperately sad time. Mary was a wonderful friend to my mum and family for a long time, and I have many memories of her that I’ll always cherish. I remember being awe struck as a young child by her homemade pizza. I remember her looking glamorous sun tanning herself on a lounge chair in her back garden when I was a little girl and I would call over to play with Roisin. I remember countless mornings and late afternoons being driven in and out of Christ King Secondary School usually in third gear with RTE 1 on the radio. I remember when Mary would surprise us with a pack of Taytos from the garage on the way home…it was once in a blue moon which made it very special. I remember her giving me a brilliant hug after one particularly rough day at school, and another one only a few months ago after my dad had died. What a special and completely unforgettable lady. Rest in peace Mary.

Sincere condolences to the O’Mahony family. I had the honour of being a pupil of Ms O’Mahony’s maths class for my 5 years of secondary school and she was my favourite teacher. Her infectious enthusiasm for her subject was unrivalled and she made the complexity of honours maths seem fun and achievable. She challenged us, but reassured us; her kindness always evident. She genuinely wanted us all to achieve and be the best we possibly could. She was the making of so many of her students. (She even fished me out of the deep end one swimming lesson that went a bit wrong, making me tread water so I wouldn’t fear it again)! I was so sad to hear of Ms O’Mahony’s passing. I will always think of her with such fondness. May her soul rest in peace.

Mary was one in a million. I was so sad to have missed her funeral. She played such a major role in a critical turning point of my life.
Having failed my maths test at Christmas of leaving certificate and having dropped to pass as a result, she took me under her wing and nurtured me back to achieving a C in honours maths that year. Knowing I hadn’t achieved my potential in that leaving cert, my parents graciously gave me the opportunity to repeat and Mary gave generously of her time to challenge me and to push me to achieving an A in my repeat leaving.
Her attention to detail and her careful coaching to encourage her students to find solutions to their own mistakes was empowering.
The last time I visited I had promised to call again and to bring Julia with me. I’m so sorry I never made it back to see her again. She was truly an inspiration. Pushing herself beyond the limitations of where others would have simply given up.
