With deepest sympathy to Elaine and Brian on the sad passing of Mary. May she rest in peace
Deepest sympathy to Elaine and Brian and Elaine and family, and to the Counihan family, on the passing of my friend Mary.
My lifelong friend (and later Best Man) Kevin became enchanted with Mary during our days in UCD. She was beautiful, great fun and brilliant – first place in the huge B Comm class. During my 20s I spent huge amounts of time with her and Kevin, playing bridge, darts, and everything else. Mary and Kevin were of course an integral part of our social group. Mary was always on for a bit of fun, and was a great friend, as typified by her spending a fiull week in a sweltering May heatwave typing my college thesis.
We obviously had far less contact after Jane and I moved to the US, but almost always met up during our fairly frequent trips back to Ireland.
In the early stages of Covid, our friend Conor Gunne set up a weekly online bridge session that include Mary and me – it was a wonderful experience, and I felt transported back in time to our bridge games (also with Conor) in their house in Balally Drive in the early 70s, with Mary’s humour and intelligence still evident in full force.
We last played online bridge with Mary just 2 weeks ago, and we had been looking forward to many more years of the same. There was lots of chat during those games, and it was obvious that she had a great relationship with Brian and Elaine and family, and was very proud of them all.
Mary leaves me with a myriad of great memories. You will truly be missed, Mary.

I’m very sorry indeed to hear of Mary’s death. Before her move to Ballinasloe, she & I were colleagues at Mount St Anne’s Secondary School, Milltown. Her late sister Ann was in my class at that very school. I remember her as a friendly, welcoming, hospitable, witty and fun colleague. Dublin’s loss, when she moved West, was definitely Ballinasloe’s gain, and Mary was greatly missed. My deepest sympathy to her children & grandchildren on your loss. My thoughts are with you at this sad and difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.
