I have just heard today Sunday February 23 from Bernadette OSullivan the news about Mary’s death. I knew herself and Gerry well, we spent a holiday together in the Burren, in 1980, after a stay in Gerry’s home in Clontibret. Whenever I pass Clontibret on my way to Buncrana, I think of you both. Mary was the best linguist I ever met, her expertise in both French and German was reflected in her First Class Honours BA in UCD. She carried her learning lightly. We lost contact, but the friendship did and does mean much to me. I pass on my deepest sympathy to Gerry and to the children. I hope somehow somewhere our paths cross and that you see this message. Dear Claire, so sorry to hear of your Mums sudden passing. A terrible loss to you and all the family. I only met her briefly a few times at the show but she struck me as a lovely generous person. Mind yourself, such a difficult time. Triona

I met Mary at the start of our teaching careers and enjoyed her company on a Vichy course. She had a great love and enthusiasm for languages as a means of communication. Our paths crossed in working groups in Institiúid Teangeolaíochta Éireann. In her career in education Mary made an immense contribution to German at a time of huge change in language learning/teaching in Ireland. I remember her smiling happily at in-service courses, always receptive to new ideas and willing to share her own.
May she rest in peace.
I was delighted to meet Mary again last year, after a lapse of many years. Sad now that all that energy and creativity is gone. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aici. Deepest sympathy to all her family.

Thinking of you all at this difficult time. I have many years of memories, working with Mary in Athlone. She was intuitive and astute, always generous in sharing her knowledge and insights with those who were starting out on their careers. I also have jewellery to wear and treasure, particularly an item she designed and gifted me. She touched so many lives through her work, care and interest in people. This continued through the beautiful pieces that she lovingly created for others.

Sincere condolences to Gerard and family on the sad passing of Mary. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
I am shocked and saddened to hear of Mary's sudden and premature passing and I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Anne, Della and the Varilly siblings and to her husband Gerry and family and pray that the outpouring of love for her will support you in the months to come. Mary and I were teenage contemporaries in Dungloe although we didn't attend the same school or college. Still we were always aware of each other's career path, either through family or common acquaintances in the German teaching fraternity. Our paths didn't often cross except at her jewellry stand at some craft fair but Mary was always the same friendly, engaging person I had always known. Her uniqueness lay in the rare combination of extreme intelligence, charm and utter humility. Suaimhneas siorrai di.

I met Mary on numerous occasions over the last 20 years, mostly through Aura-Soma. She was extremely knowledgeable, multi-talented, constantly learning and deeply in touch with her spiritual nature.
Her creativity knew no bond from soul drawings to jewelry as well as the written word.
I last saw her just before her hip replacement, from which i was told she recovered well and it was an absolute shock to realise that she left us so suddenly.
She will be dearly missed and is leaving a beautiful turquoise imprint behind her.
Rest well Mary and enjoy your travel to the light.
I am so sorry to hear about the death of Mary - such a kind and gentle woman. My deepest condolences to Gerry, Claire, Stephen, Jessie, Cormac and the extended McNally and Varilly families and friends. RIP
