Dear Padraic, I was so sorry to hear of Mary's passing; she was a wonderful person and I very much appreciated working with her on northern issues when she was in the Seanad, she was so full of commitment and life. Very sad to hear this news. Mary was extremely kind to me as a teenager — letting me and other wayward friends hang around the house with Cliona. She also gave me a job at Lir while I was a student — she was of that generation that turned the country around with enterprise and a sense that Ireland could aim for excellence in its produce and manufacturing, paving the way for the wealth and success we have as a nation today. Mary gave me my first job in politics, giving me the opportunity to work for her during her time in Seanad Éireann. I was young at the time, and she took a chance on me, something for which I will always be grateful.
No two days were ever the same working with her, and I could have listened to her stories all day long. I can say with certainty that she came into that office every single day ready to work hard and to help people. That was always her priority.

Mary was one of the kindest, wittiest, most supportive women I have ever had the privilege of knowing. She was a trailblazer for women, including myself, and she was my biggest supporter - always encouraging me, strongly and without hesitation, to follow my ambitions. Her belief in me helped shape my confidence in ways I will never forget.

I remember her energy, her intuition, and her deep commitment to public service. I will never forget being shocked when she once drove halfway across Ireland at a moment’s notice to help resolve an issue for someone who needed her. All she ever wanted was to help others.

Mary’s impact on my life, and on so many others, will last eternally.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of Mary. A remarkable lady. It was always uplifting and empowering to spend time in her company. She was full of energy, of goodwill and of kindness. Her spark and joy meant time in her company was always enjoyable. Mary had a wonderful intellect and a big picture view of the world.
