Had him for Maths in the seventies. I thank him for advising me NOT to take honours, but pass maths, which I managed. Marvellous teacher, very nice bloke, sad to hear of his passing.

You were an inspiration to many. RIP

V funny man. V cool. Brilliant teacher. Put in SOME effort to educate us. Alot of the Children in the school werent v bright. Or bright at all. But that didnt stop him. He used make racehorses out of donkeys. How he persevered with some of the students, i'll never know. Huge huge respect for this man. Absolute Legend. See you in Heaven Champ🦅🏋‍♀️✝️🙏🐑👑👻

I was one of the lucky passed pupils of Beneavin, i had Mr. Finnegan for Maths, i used to dread his Maths class, because i was so bad at Maths, He obviously knew this, and had me and about 5 others up at the blackboard EVERY CLASS!!!
I didnt appreciate it then, but because of Mr. Finnegan, i passed both my Inter cert and my Leaving cert Maths!!!
I was just sorry i never got to say "thank you" for putting the time into helping me with Maths,
He was an amazing man, with a great sense of humor with his one liners "Mr. Curtis, is thst maths problem written in Chinese?"....." because i dont understand a word of it!!!"....from the bottom of my heart, and 30 odd years later, Thank you, and Rest In Peace xx

Matt was my maths teacher for 5 years in Beneavin and was hands down the most influential and inspirational teacher I ever had. To this day I often recall some of the great moments in class.
He exuded authority but was always fair and often witty, treating us with respect and warmth.

Deeply saddened to hear the passing of Matt, he was an inspirational teacher, feared, respected and always fair. He was my maths teacher in Beneavin and I will always be grateful for the extra time he gave me when I was struggling with maths. (I’d get a better answer from the cat!)He introduced us to computers and how they would change the way we work. So sorry to hear the news of Mr. Finnegan's passing. I was extremely lucky to have him as my maths teacher in Beneavin College. His guidance and encouragement had a huge influence on the direction of my career after school. His unique teaching method that needed no books but only chalk and a blackboard was amazing and so effective - he was always so respectful listening to the students efforts at solving problems. Condolences to his family at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Finnegan’s passing recently as he was such a pivotal figure in my secondary school days.

He was my maths teacher for three years from first year in Beneavin and never, ever used a textbook; everything was in his head yet he still managed to convey the lesson clearly.
Maths was never my strong point and he picked up on my struggles early and brought me aside to discuss how I felt and that I needn’t fear the subject either which helped me no end.

I will also never forget a class coming up to one Christmas when he spent the whole lesson telling us about the volunteer work he was involved in with St. Vincent DePaul, showing us another side to his persona.

I was lucky enough to meet him a few times in later years and we always ended up having a great chat about this, that and the other.

He was an excellent teacher and a gentleman, may he rest in peace.

So sorry to hear this news, Mr Finnegan was an inspirational teacher to me and so many in Beneavin College, a man who inspired awe among impressionable first years when he told us to put away on books as he taught us maths without textbooks. Tough but incredibly fair, Mr Finnegan was an enormous influence on me and I want to pass on my deepest sympathies to his family, former colleagues and friends on his passing. So sad to hear of Matty's passing I have had the pleasure of knowing Mat from a very young age especially together in the Porterstown Scouts. and the many journeys to Lourdes with him His Log books about those journeys are treasured in the Units archives.
