Matt Doyle

To the family of Matt Doyle.

Sincere condolences on the sad loss of Matt. He is held in high esteem in the Irish tennis community. I had the privilege of playing against Matt at the Irish Indoor Championships at Kilternan a few years ago. We chatted over a cup of tea after the match. Matt was a quiet, unassuming person. He was very modest, despite his many talents and great achievements. He helped set up the GOAL challenge which benefited charities in the Third World.

His memory and legacy will live on.

I was fortunate to see Matt play Davis Cup in the RDS against the US, where he took Irish tennis to their highest ever level. Later I met him as a member of the K Club and got to meet the gentleman that he was. Always had a joke and a smile, he was larger than life. May he rest now in peace.

We have known Matt for more than 30 years during which time we have enjoyed his quick wit and and good humour (most of the time) Matt was a very popular member of the K Club and his presence will be sadly missed.

One of many lasting memories of Matt which sum up his personality, humour and kind heart.

Fifteen years ago I got an apartment at the KClub, whilst working in Citywest. One rainy afternoon I collected my wife and son from Dublin airport and dropped them off at the Palmer Club House.

As they walked into the bar, Matt said ‘Hey its surfer dude and his girlfriend’, that evening Matt invited our son Sam to join him the following day at the Wed roll-up and play with another 2 well known members.
Sam was only 15 at the time and this was his first trip to the KClub, what an experience, what a memory.

He excelled in Tennis but was equally adapt in golf playing & commentating on both sports.

We were all both shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Matt's passing.

Apart from being our greatest post-war tennis exponent, Matt was also a deeply committed humanitarian.
He found time to visit the GOAL staff on a memorable trip to Darfur, in famine affected Sudan, while the annual GOAL Challenge, held in Dublin for a decade, and which featured such notables as John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg and Yannick Noah, would not have happened without his pivotal involvement.

Matt and Sean Sorensen gave the Irish tennis community some of our very best days during their Davis Cup exploits in the 1980s.
