Our deepest condolences to the Murphy family. My Sister and I will always remember Matt's kindness when our Mother passed away and Matt arranged to have a Mass said for her on Sherkin. Matt's legacy is immense. His commitment to the marine environment and his belief in the importance of education and opportunities especially for young people inspired us all. I will miss my chats with Matt when out walking on Sherkin or visiting him at Drolain with Terry. I always loved hearing about all his projects from the canoeing and the horse caravans to the early days on Sherkin with the Marine Station and the Adventure Centre. There were some stories! Above all, Matt's love for his family shone through beyond everything else. It was a privilege to know him. Rest in peace now Matt with your beloved Eileen
I (and I'm sure many others) are indebted to Matt and his passion for the environment and the support and development of young people. In addition to valuable data, his work at Sherkin Island Marine Station has helped create a legacy of committed environmental professionals. My time there as a 'bod' was intense, educational and wonderful! I admired Matt's work ethic, dedication and close-knit family.
Matt is a huge loss to his family, friends and to the island and marine communities. Rest in peace Matt.

I grew up reading the Sherkin Comment, and eventually I got to visit Matt and meet him for the first time on the Island during Covid, he was a legend, he invited me in and had lots to tell about his path in life and his mission. He was a true inspiration to many - including scientists and environmentalists, those seeking to explore and protect the earth's abundance. Condolences to all the family, Rest in Peace Matt

May I offer my sympathy and condolences to all the family at this sad time. I just saw the lovely Obituary in the Cork Examiner.
Matt was one in a million and I met him at many conferences organised by Cork City. Co. over a number of years when I was a Councillor (Green Party). He was a very kind, learned and knowledgeable man who made time for everybody and took a keen interest in you as a person. He gave me good advice and we stayed in touch.
I was lucky to visit and stay on Sherkin Island some years ago and went to see him. He was in great form though semi-retired (if you could say that he ever retired!) at that stage. We had a great conversation and it was so lovely to see him.
So sad to hear of his death but am sure he will live on in his family and the legacy of the Sherkin Island Marine Station.

Sending best wishes and heartfelt condolences to all the Murphy family. Matt was an inspirational 'man on a mission' and i am proud to have been a small part of his Sherkin Island Marine Station legacy (dive and shore surveys in 1996). As well as the incredible long term data collected around Sherkin, he helped give so many young scientists and environmentalists the experience and confidence to kick start their marine careers. I value every moment and memory of my time on the Island. He will leave a big hole but was loved and admired by so many. RIP Matt.
Our sincere sympathy to all Matt's family at this difficult time. I first got to know Matt in 1987 on the establishment of the Department of the Marine and we have worked closely on fish ad marine matters since then. We also became good friends. Matt had worked in Dunlops with my late father in law, Matt O'Farrell, and with the late Minister of Sate at the Department of the Marine, Gerry O'Sullivan TD. They must have had very interesting tea breaks!! As many have commented, Matt was a visionary and thinker with a strong commitment to long term sustainability of our natural resources: long before it became a core element of Government policy. but he was also a doer. The work of his Marine Station bears testament to this. His Annual Conferences were well attended by people coming from all over the world, as were his contributors. His regular publication, Sherkin Comment, contained informed comment and information on the marine sector. What I found very interesting was the the long series of marine inshore research data he collected. Some of this work was done by young graduates. Of course, his daughter, Susan, was central to everything he did. While Matt rarely left Sherkin, if I ever wished to find out what was really gong on in any part of the fish or marine sectors, a call to Matt always put me right. Fear mor clainne ab ea Matt agus ta se anois lena bhean, ailinn, Eileen. Ta do charn togtha agat Matt agus go dtuga Dia suaimhneas siorai duit: ta se tuilte agat.
My deepest condolences to Mark, Audrey, Matty, Michael, Susan, Robbie, Peter, Aidan, Jason, Dylan and the extended Murphy family on the passing of Matt.

Condolences to all the Murphy family from the Quinlans; Brian, Fergus,Aidan and myself. Our father, Paddy Quinlan, employed Matt in Dunlops and they spoke highly of each other. Brian spent many hours, days and weeks canoeing on the Blackwater with Matt. Fergus got the idea to build canoes as Matt had them all over our garden! I went to work at the outdoor centre & riding school early 70s and enjoyed Eileen & Matt's company. Matt was both an ideas and action man. He will be missed.
My sincere condolences to all the Murphy and extended family on the loss of Matt. I spent the summer of 1981 working in what was then the outdoor pursuits centre. I have very fond memories of that summer and remember how Matt and Eileen treated us all as part of an extended family. Matt was a visionary with huge energy but also warmth and compassion. He was a force for positive change and achieved so much. May he rest in peace.
