I was saddened to learn of the death of Matt I taught with him for a short time in Castleknock many years ago. I remember well his kindness and good humour. My deepest sympathy to Matt’s family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Barrett — or “Sir,” as we always called him — was my Sixth Class teacher at St. Brigid’s National School, Castleknock, back in the early 1980s. The first time I ever heard of the town of Lahinch was in his classroom. He spoke of it with such warmth, happiness, and pride that it left a lasting impression on me. Even now, all these years later, whenever I hear or see the name Lahinch, I think of Matt Barrett. Rest in peace, Sir.
