Matt was a true gentleman and will be missed by many of his friends.
He was the first person whom I met on my first day in B&I Line on 7 January 1967 having just moved from South Wales a few weeks earlier. He remained a close personal friend ever since. I personally will miss his soft spoken words of wisdom.

Deeply saddened to learn of Matt’s death. I got to know him, probably in the late 1970s, through mutual involvement in the Institute of Transport. He was a wise and supportive contributor to the Institute and generous in constructive advice to me personally over very many years. I was so sorry to hear this morning of Matt's death. We had lost touch in recent years but I remember him with great fondness as a warm hearted and gentle man. I first met him in 1979 when I worked for the Chartered Institute of Transport. He always offered wise counsel and never stinted in his support. I am so sad to hear that Matt has left us. For decades, he was a wonderful member and active contributor to Probus Dun Laoghaire Marine.

He was also a fantastic president of Probus for a record, never-repeated, three-year term, 1999+2000+2001: he was so good that no-one wanted to replace him!! It was during this tenure that he welcomed me warmly into the Probus family more than 20 years ago.

A marvellous human being, who will be sorely missed.
