It was only yesterday that we learned of Mattie’s passing. Please accept our sympathies and apologies for not sympathising sooner. Mattie was a true gentleman and we always enjoyed his visits when he was passing through Roscommon. May he rest in peace.

The recent passing of Mattie Gilligan leaves a major void in the community life of Claremorris and its hinterland. Mattie was a true institution in this area down through the decades. Three years ago I had the privilege of doing a two page 'spread' about Mattie in The Mayo News. It was an education in itself. Mattie was a total gentleman whose kindness to so many families in their times of sadness and sorrow was always reflected in the dignity and compassion he brought to the Funeral Director business. People like Mattie teach us to respect tradition and love of place. Our condolences to Pat, Martin and Margaret, and all the Gilligan family circle on the passing of a great Mayo. Rest in peace, Mattie.

Am so so sorry to hear of the sad passing of Matt. He was an apsolute gentleman one of a kind. I remember him fondly walking to mass every morning with Pat, & popping into Daybreak where i worked for the chats & his paper. He will be sadly missed by all.
