I, along with Seamus Conroy started work on the 10 February ‘75. We both stayed in digs with Maura and Peter in Larkfield Gardens. I remember Maura as a very kind and caring lady who was keen to make sure that Seamus and I would be okay and make our way safely around the city. Maura made us feel welcome and at home during all the time we stayed in her home.
May she now rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to the entire McMahon and Vaughan families on the passing of a lovely kind and generous lady in Maura.
My story; I first met Maura exactly 50 years ago in Larkfield Gardens when I started working in Dublin on Feb 10th 1975. Maura was my landlady providing full meals every day, breakfast, packed lunch and dinner every evening all of which were beautiful and way better than anything I was used to. But she was a lot more than that, I was a young 17 year old raw, nieve, innocent lad who hadnt a clue about anything. My father was in Hume St hospital at the time and Maura always made sure to have my dinner early in order to facilitate my daily visits to see him. She used to provide me with all the info required re buses, safe routes to walk, areas to avoid etc. A wonderful mentor in lots of ways, I deeply regret not staying in touch with her.
May she rest well in heaven for she was all but a saint on earth.
Hoping to meet Bernadette and Dermot either this evening or tomorrow.

The world was a better place having Maura in it, and our lives were enriched greatly by the many times we spent with her. Maura was such a warm, kind and welcoming person, her smile always lit up the room. She was an absolute lady and will be so missed by all of us lucky to have known her. May she rest in peace. She truly was a beautiful lady, inside and out, full of good spirits, energy and love for her family. We remember the many occasions we got to spend time with Maura including our recent impromptu visit to Kilgorman at the end of the summer. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I admired Maura’s enthusiasm for life, one example of which was joining a Carlow ladies’ group on short breaks around the country, about which she’d let me know in advance, and give me a report on her return, if she bumped into me - in my experience, Maura wasn’t a woman to impose herself on someone.

I can see Maura sitting outside her front door, enjoying the western sun, in the warmer months of the year, and tidying up the vegetation in her front garden, both connecting her to passing neighbours and strangers, with both of whom she was happy to engage.

I can see Maura turning left from her front gate, making her way south up Oakdown Road towards the Church of the Good Shepherd, being a country woman, no doubt, sometimes consciously noting the view of the Dublin mountains.

This very short walk was either to attend Mass or some afternoon leisure activity in the Parish Centre, through both, giving expression to her sense of community, forged in her County Carlow upbringing.

Being close contemporaries at the senior stage in life, we’d chat across the dividing wall between our front gardens, often in agreement about societal changes we might not have welcomed, but there was never a bitter tone in Maura’s voice, evidence of the tolerance I saw in her.

May Maura rest in the peace she deserves, after a long life dutifully following what she saw as her role. Maura was a very good example of the best characteristics of a woman of her era.

A Churchtown Legend. Maura was all you could hope for in a minder. Kind, funny, patient and educating. I feel very blessed to have spent much of my school years in her care.
