Maureen Lonergan

Our sincere sympathy to all of Maureen's family and friends on her passing. We have both had the pleasure of having Ms. Lonergan as a french teacher during our time in St. Mary's (one of us in the 70s and one in the late 90s). She was a most dedicated and talented teacher who was greatly respected by her pupils. Ms. Lonergan had a great love of France and enjoyed organising exchanges/ au pair jobs for her pupils and thanks to her, we both got to spend some lovely summers there learning the language. She was one in a million. May she rest in peace.

Miss Lonergan taught in my school, St. Patrick’s, Cork for just one year. She was my Fifth Year French teacher in 1969/70. I thank her for her gentle, caring presence, her wonderful talent and for starting my life-long love affair with France, the French language and all things French. She was very special and will never be forgotten. Sleep peacefully, Miss Lonergan.

Thank you Ms Lonergan for being a very memorable teacher who taught us so patiently and kindly. You invoked a love of the Brontes, especially Wuthering Heights. Thank you and rest in gentle peace.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Miss Lonergan. She taught me LC French in the 90's and she left an incredible mark. French was my favourite subject and my best mark in the Leaving and I've no doubt it was down to Miss Longergan's pure dedication to teaching and to her wonderful kindness. You dare not mess in Lonnie's class but you always knew she had your best interests at heart. She will be missed greatly by all of us who were so lucky to have had her and by many who called her our favourite teacher. My deepest sympathies to all Miss Lonergan's family and friends. I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Ms Lonergan RIP. She was an amazing and inspirational English teacher who, thanks to her love of English literature and dedicated teaching, imbued a love of same in all of her students, so much so that I went on to be an English and French teacher (though I wasn't lucky enough to have her for French). I was reflecting only recently on Ms Lonergan's influence, and ironically, I found myself at a literary festival the weekend she passed away. I know she would like that. May her gentle and kind soul rest in everlasting peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. RIP Ms Lonergan and thank you.

Sad to hear of Maureen’s passing. Huge admiration for her as a teacher in St Mary’s. She encouraged many of us to go on to 3rd level by giving us CAO forms to fill out in an era when it was the exception rather than the norm. It was with great sadness that I heard of Ms Lonergans death.I was lucky to have had her as my French teacher for the Leaving Cert in the early eighties.She was so extremely dedicated to her job and was always first into the classroom before her students ,having set up the contents of her wicker basket on the desk so as not to waste a second of class time.
She was a truly inspiring teacher and I will always remember her with great fondness.Deepest condolences to all her family.May she rest in peace.

Like so many, I was incredibly lucky to have been taught English and French by Ms. Lonergan in the mid 90s. She has always been my favourite teacher and I speak fondly of her often.
She patiently would read my poetry and her critique on my poems was by far the most important to me.

Miss Lonergan was not only a brilliant teacher but also a very kind lady , who had all our best interests at heart . I have remembered often over the years especially as La Marseillaise is sung in stadiums , something she taught us back in the day along with Alouette !

On my own behalf and on behalf of Christ the King Parish, Turner's Cross, Cork I offer my sympathies to Maureen's family. She and I shared an expedition to Brittany in 1990 with students from our respective schools. I have always retained such good memories of Maureen.

Ms. Lonergan taught me English and French in the early 80s in St. Mary’s Highschool. An incredibly committed and brilliant teacher, and a lady through and through. I’ll always remember my Mum coming home from a parent teacher meeting to tell me that Ms. Lonergan said that I had absolutely no appreciation for Shakespeare : ) She wasn’t wrong, but clearly the statement had the desired effect because I do now. I also have very fond memories of the day she took some of us to Cork city to record a play, sound effects and all, on the radio. We enjoyed the most wonderful time with her that day.

Ms. Lonergan inspired me, and so many more young ladies at St. Mary’s. May her wonderfully bright and beautiful soul rest in peace.

I'll always remember when she took us on school tour to Paris in late 70's and she reminded me to get a move on crossing the road as we were not in Patrick's Street now!
