I was saddened to learn of the passing of dear Maureen (Miss Smith) this week. Maureen was a pivotal part of Ballaghaderreen for many decades, having taught Science to every girl that walked through the doors of St Joseph's Secondary School. I can still picture Miss Smith's Science lab, a converted dormitory from the orphanage that was, which Maureen carefully curated and cared for. It was her pride and joy, and the place where Maureen proudly conducted science experiments, always sporting her white lab coat.

Maureen is fondly remembered by all the Kilcoynes. She became a friend to my parents during the years when she rented a flat in our old family home on New Street. I've no doubt that she enjoyed her years living there.

Maureen was a warm and passionate lady. May she rest in peace.

I have very fond memories of Miss Smith in the science lab in St. Joseph's Secondary School. Donned in white coat, she would dissect a rabbit with great energy and enthusiasm as she beckoned her students around her to examine the internal organs of the unfortunate animal. The prospective nurses and medics in the class would gather closely around, enthusiastic heads under and over each arm, people standing on tiptoe to stretch over her shoulders as hands would appear from all directions with shouts of "can I feel its heart Miss, can I feel its lungs Miss". The "Never to Be" medics like myself would stand as near to the door as possible, the scent of open dead rabbit teasing the nauseous nostrils, exacerbated of course by a busy mind, breakfast doing a series of somersaults and giving firm urgent warnings of a reappearance without further notice. There and then, I would make a solemn promise to self - not one more morsel of food would pass my lips - ever. That was until the dinner would appear on the table a few hours later as the trauma of the day was well forgotten. One day feeling quite ill at school, Miss Smith took me up to her private rooms and looked after me with the love and care of a mother until it was time to go home. She was a beautiful person, kind and warm and generous, as well as being a very dedicated and motivated teacher. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
