I knew Maurice to be an outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate student of history. As a lecturer and tutor he was beloved by UCC students of all ages. As a teacher and scholar thoroughness was his hallmark. To consolidate his knowledge and understanding he visited every archive and read every book and article essential to his research. We arrived at UCC around the same time. Me as a latecomer to university teaching and he as a mature student. He was a great support to me over many years. I am very sad that he has passed. It was a privilege to know him and to work alongside him.
