I was absolutely shocked to hear of the untimely passing of one of the great characters that it has been my pleasure to have known in my life.
Maurice and myself spent many a year together in Ballyfin College , sharing many a classroom , dare i say it - he was listening- i wasn't !! .
He was always up for a bit of divilment , but at the same time he would be a protector for anyone who was struggling .
He was a kind , intelligent , funny bloke , actually had a maturity about him than the majority of us in the class , he had time for everybody , i remember the many debates that would take place about special effects and different movie's director's styles after he'd been to see the latest blockbuster in the cinema in Portlaoise !! .
He was truly one of lifes true Gents.
Genuinely shocked at this news.
I've nothing but fond memories of him which, although tinged with sadness now , on hearing this news , they would still bring a smile to my face .
Rest easy Maurice , and keep an eye on us down here from time to time .

I was very fortunate to work with Maurice for 3 years in Oracle. He had a great wit, exuded kindness and was brilliant company with a pint in hand.

There are no words to describe the sudden loss of a brother, a son, a friend, a companion. I met Maurice at the UCD Karate club - he was such a funny relaxed guy and I really liked him. My sincerest condolences to Olga and all of the Rice family. RIP

I had the good fortune to work with Maurice who was a kind, considerate gentleman and always had a twinkle in his eye. A true man for all seasons.

It’s with deepest shock that I heard today of Maurice’s untimely passing. My deepest sympathy and condolences to Olga, Mike, Jean and Murt. I met Maurice (through Mike) at UCD and the three of us had a whale of a time cooking, walking the hills and talking into the night. Maurice was sharp and opinionated!, wise for his years and FUN. He was full of fun. I’ll remember his smile and the laughter. Rest in peace Maurice.

It was with absolute shock, which I'm still trying to process, that I heard of Maurice's untimely passing. It seems only yesterday that we were trawling the tap-houses of Dingle, a town where he will be missed by many. His appetite for life and his mercurial intelligence, whether he was hiking a peak or discussing the rarefied pleasures of arts and culture, were ever vibrant, even in his moments of greatest urbanity ~ a quality that, I think, defined him for many. I know that his spirit will be an irreplaceable loss to the community of those who knew him, both far and wide. "Ní bheidh a liethéid arís ann". We'll see you on the flipside, brother.

I first met Maurice through the UCD Karate club, and later lived with Maurice for over 2 years in Coppinger. The stories are all true, even the embellished ones. Maurice was always on his way to a better place, lets hope it lives up to the hype.

To Olga, Michael, Jean & Murt and families , what a wonderful celebration today of Maurice and the person he was. To quote one of his (many) favourite movies : the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very , very brightly. One of the warmest, upbeat and genuinely kind people I have ever had the honour of calling a friend. He has gone ahead of us into the universe, but only so he can give us the full low down when we meet again. Missing you already dude, I will see you after the gig.

He carried a treasure trove of hard-won knowledge, considered opinions, and unique memories that we each of us have only a share.
Even he had trouble retaining it all and it spilled from him along the way.
So much of that hoarde is now lost to the depths, excepting only that which we who are left carry with us.
But the great value of those memories he gave us is why we continue to share them again and again - in the stories we still tell of when he brought us into his world and shared a piece of his extraordinary life with us.
Thank you, Maurice. It was a true gift to know you.
We all will miss you but we will certainly not forget you.

I was in school with Maurice in Ballyfin and we were in UCD together. He was a lovely, genuine guy, a gentleman, and I’m so sorry to hear this news. I have a great memory of rocking up to an exam in UCD with him in my first car on a sunny day blasting Led Zeppplin, not overly concerned about the exam. God be good to him.
