I haven’t seen “Mick” Bouchier-Hayes since I was a child. He was some character. He basically taught me how to work hard, helping out in the bar at Lansdowne, when I was 11 or 12 years old. He would tirelessly come down to the clubhouse in the “old” Lansdowne Road the night after discos and parties and clean everything up (sometimes suffering the effects of the night before himself). Any hardship I experienced in America when I first arrived, working menial jobs was offset by the experience I had with him in those days: bussing tables, hauling kegs up flights of stairs, clearing hundreds of glasses from a packed bar in a matter of minutes – and cleaning them – and then lining up 30 pints of Guinness in a production line! The value of fortitude, toughing it out, and “getting it done” stood me in good stead in those years and later on. Funny how someone you haven’t seen since you were a child touched you in some way all your life, and he probably never knew it. He could be gruff, but also very funny, and a gentleman at the same time. He had a good heart and was also kind to my sister and my family. He would share his Neil Diamond albums with us! My very sincere condolences to his family and all who knew him. Rest in Peace, Michael.
