Una & Claire, we were so saddened to hear of Mike’s passing, and are sorry we could not be at the funeral to pay our respects in person. We send our deepest sympathies to you both, to Mike’s mother and extended family.

We have such fond memories of holidays in Alvor with the three of you. Mike was always first to dive into the pool, and would patiently build sandcastles and dig holes at the beach with the kids. Those days were full of fun and laughter, and we will always remember the joy of spending that time with your family.

We hope the happy memories you shared as a family continue to bring comfort to you both. May you and Claire be surrounded by love as you guide and support her in the difficult times ahead.

I am deeply saddened at the passing of Michael. My sincere condolences to his family. Michael was a true gentleman. I last spoke to Michael at the Cork Congress. He would always make time to say hello and have a chat. Michael was a great character to be around. The Irish chess community truly lost a King.

Our darling Michael, our hearts are breaking in this new reality where our forever fond memories and shared love for you now sustain us.

A genuine and positive spirit, you loved and lived a life to be celebrated—a beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin, brother-in-law, a true and steadfast friend, who valued the strength drawn from those close bonds of family and friendship. A devoted father to your accomplished and beautiful daughter Claire, know she shares your focus, zest for life, and will fulfil the potential you nurtured to grow to be an incredible woman.

A proud Cork man, a gentleman, you filled our lives with joy, humour, experimental cooking, cures for every ache, and shared your love of sport, chess, squash, and even Man United. We hide our goodbyes in our silent tears, and say may your spirit be free and come to rest in the loving arms of your father Dan.

We were shocked here in Flexachem to hear of Michael’s sudden and tragic passing. Michael was an important part of our Flexachem team for many years and never failed to bring his humour, wit and intelligence every day. The absence of his unique presence will be hugely felt by everyone.

I have many memories in our young days of the visits to Blarney or when Michael & co came to Cullen, but my fondest memory was College in Cork, whether it was after a big night out or just a bad day, meeting Michael in the College Atrium or corridor, his infectious smile just fixed everything.
