It was a rude awakening for me to meet two people from Saskatchewan within a couple of weeks way back in 1965 in London. We had great times and my family was awestruck by Michael in our visit to Plymouth for Christmas. He did such a good job coaching Jim to be Father Christmas so the children wouldn't know "who it really was". Mind you the dialogue was salty. "Ho, ho, bleeping ho!" He was always great fun and wickedly funny. Everyone will miss him and I'm so glad he became part of our "family". Lots of love from Ontario and B.C. XOX

Our sincerest sympathy to you Oonagh and all the Phillips family on the very sad death of Michael. A true gentleman and lovely person. May Michael rest in peace.
We were saddened to hear about the death of Michael. But we are consoled by the fact that he lived a long, happy, enjoyable and purposeful life with Oonagh and family. We will watch his funeral tomorrow. He was a wonderful boss at the Canadian Consulate in NYC where we had a great run with our public affairs and cultural program, Canada in NY: the Upper North Side. Michael was tremendous fun to work for and with. Until then, I had only heard about his wit, story telling and joie de vivre. He more than lived up to his reputation. So happy too that he appears to have had a long retirement in Ireland with Oonagh and family. A small regret is that we never arranged a last chat and a laugh with Michael and Oonagh during one of our visits to family in Ireland. Rest in peace and laughter, Michael, until we meet again.
Dear Oonagh, It is with sadness that I learned of Michael's passing. Please accept my profound sympathy with your loss. I fondly recall our time together in Nairobi, New York, and our visit with you in Dublin in 1998. Always full of laughter and interesting conversations, and all so long ago.
With my sincere condolences to you, Ciara, Conor and family, Erika
I knew Michael as an esteemed
colleague with whom I worked over the years from a distance. I regret never sharing a posting with Michael. I met him during his delegation’s visit to Warsaw in 1976. I had great respect for him from that moment on. He was astute, empathetic, open-minded and blessed with wonderful humility and wit. He was a consummate professional. He brought Canada great credit over many years.
Please accept my most sincere
condolences.

We feel grief and sadness on the passing of Michael and wish to express our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to you and your families.

Michael was a caring, generous and intelligent person with a good sense of humor who spread happiness around him. Given his straightforward and kind personality, it is no surprise that he also excelled as a diplomat.

Dear Oonagh. I was so sorry to hear of Michael's passing. I became so fond of Michael during our physiotherapy sessions. He was incredibly determined, but even more so, he really wanted to understand the deeper workings of the human body and why I had chosen each individual exercise specifically. As a result, our sessions often ran over 30 mins! He shared many interesting stories with me, I can tell he led a very interesting and accomplished life. He was also so incredibly proud of his family and all their respective achievements and managed to share this pride in a very loving and humble way, never boasting. He will be missed greatly, I am so sorry for your loss.

Oonagh & family
Sorry to hear about Micheal.
Dear Oonagh, Ciara, Conor, and all the family. How to express such a loss? The first memory Michael & I had of each other was the summer of 1955 (?) when I in a leg cast was being chauffeured around Waskesiu by our mutual friend Leo Lubin. It wasn't until Christmas 1987 that we found ourselves living right across the street from each other in New Edinburgh. Small world!! Countless visits back & forth in Ottawa, trips to Stockholm, to New York City, to Dún Laoghaire, to Ramelton and lots of laughter and nonsense followed. Michael was a really great guy - with an amazing, talented, caring family. He will be sorely missed. Much love & hugs to you all.
Oonagh, we are sorry to hear about the passing of Michael. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very sad time.
