Had Mr Calnan for History for Inter cert a long time ago but memories of those classes still bring a smile to my face. He taught from the heart not just the book! Passionate about his country and wanted to instil that same love and pride for it in his pupils. My dad was a loyal Labour supporter and I can still see he and Mr Calnan having long and energetic conversations about politics and how to fix the social divide! He was a great spinner of interesting stories and I remember him happily enthralling my friends when we met up in Canada in the 90s when he was a Senator. Made the most of his life he did!!

Condolences to the Calnan family . Michael taught me history and geography 1974 at Maria Immaculata Secondary School and was very knowledgable on the subjects . Little known is he was also a very good chess player at the school chess club . He was very involved in all activities and functions at Dunmanway when I was growing up and always entered the spirit of things with gusto . May Michael Rest in Peace .

on the loss of your beloved father and grandfather. Michael was committed to public service in all the roles he took on , both locally and nationally, and that service sprang from his deep and abiding desire for social justice. He loved Dunmanway and West Cork and its people and was
a very effective advocate on our behalf. Well read and possessing a fine intellect and wit, he was always great company . It was a privilege to have come to know him over the years. May he now rest in peace.
