I had the pleasure of working with Colm in the Office of Public Works (OPW) back in the 80s & I was part of his team that surveyed the Ballinamore/Ballyconnell Canal now known as the Shannon/Erne Waterway. He took a keen interest in this particular project because of his love of the area.
I always found him to be a gentleman who was very generous with his engineering knowledge & time.

Dear Maev and Niall,

I was so deeply saddened to hear about the passing of your beloved Father, Colm. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Colm was truly a gentleman in every sense of the word, and he was always so kind to me. I have the fondest memories of my childhood with both Colm and Nuala.

Every Christmas Eve spent with you all holds such a special place in my heart – the excitement and fun we shared are moments I will treasure forever. I am also so grateful that Garreth got to meet both Nuala and Colm and experience one of our Christmas Eve celebrations with us all. It meant a lot to both of us, and I know Garreth will hold those memories close as well.
I remember the holidays in Bundoran, where Colm would get up and dance with me on the dancefloor- he was always such fun, so patient and kind, playing with me and teaching us all to swim over the years.
I feel so fortunate to have had such a wonderful, kind man in my life, and I will always look back on these times with Nuala and Colm with great fondness.
I always looked forward to our trips over to Clontarf with my Mum and Millie.

Colm’s gentle nature and the lessons he imparted will stay with me forever. It is comforting to know he is now reunited with his beloved Nuala, and together they will continue to shine in our hearts.
They will always be treasured in mine.

With deepest sympathy and love,

Emma x
My sincerest condolences Maev on the sad passing of your beloved Dad. You were the sole carer for both your lovely Mum, Nuala and then for your Dad for as long as you could take care of him.

I remember you fondly calling him "my little munckin" when we spoke on the phone and he'd gently come in or ask who you were talking to and say hello. He'd often be looking for chocolate and was never disappointed!

I know you were content with the kindness and high level of care he received in the nursing home in his remaining years and this was a great comfort for you

Your Dad, Colm, I'm sure is now reunited with Nuala who sadly passed 4 years ago, nearly to the day. They were both characters and had a wicked sense of humour which you have inherited!

Remember the good times which I know you will when you think of him and your Mum. They will be close and watching over you x

Condolences to the rest of your family, relatives and friends.

Some beautiful memories of both your parents shared above which shows how highly regarded, loved and missed they both are but clearly never forgotten.

May your Dad Rest In Peace. Take care Hilary x

Columba Martin was a member of one of the oldest and most respected families in Ballinamore. He is remembered for many reaaons: his performances in the green and gold of the local GAA Club. the fun he engendered around the Ice Cream Parlour and the Lyric Cinema, the hilarity of his dance movements with his beloved late wife Nuala as they took to the floor during their visits for the Ballinamore Festival, his general good humour and endearing personality and of course for his engineering work during the development of the Shannon Erne Waterway.
St Peter will be anxiously awaiting Columba.
Deepest sympathy to all bis family.
Sleep the good sleep Columba.
We always looked forward to seeing Colm and Nuala every Friday night for our weekly roundup of politics, often accompanied by a lighthearted critique of the celebrities on the Late Late Show.

Colm had a unique way of making these evenings memorable, whether by lying on the floor to find the perfect position to ease his back pain or by recounting stories of his youth with great flair.

He often spoke of his days playing Gaelic football, soaring into the air with boundless energy after three days of not eating, retrieving the ball so high in the sky , it had ice on it when he came back down with it.

Colm had a deep love for Ballinamore, boxty, and Leitrim.

He was a remarkable dancer, gliding across the dance floor with a grace that was unmatched. We shared many evenings laughing together, especially when the projector film reels were played in reverse. Colm, always the most elegant : he resembled a swan when shown in reverse as he glided across the floor or jumped across rocks on the shores of Bundoran.

He had a wonderful sense of humour, a generous spirit, and an incredible way with children. Beneath it all, he was a kid at heart himself, which made him all the more endearing.

Jack Thorne said it best when he said , 'Those we love never truly leave us. There are things that death cannot touch.'

Though both Nuala and Colm have passed, their presence will always remain alive in our hearts and minds.

Colm, may you rest in peace. You were deeply loved. RIP."
