RIP to a "no nonsense" basketball coach who always got the most out of his players. A light went out in the Colaiste Iosagain basketball program after the departure of Br Denis in the 80's. We had great times traveling up and down to Cork City on weekends and playing in blitzs. The memories are very vivid after all these years. Condolences to Micheal's family/friends on his passing. RIP.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Michael’s passing. Br Denis had such a positive impact during his time in Castlebar and he gave up soo much of his time training us in basketball and football. He was instrumental in developing basketball in the town and the fun and enjoyment of playing for the school and in the town leagues are memories that remain with me. He will be sorely missed but leaves a great legacy and memories to lots of friends, students and in particular basketball players in Castlebar. He was the inspiration to many of us to develop our interest and enjoyment of playing the game. His coaching and determination to improve every team he oversaw, encouraged us to believe in our abilities and to aspire to compete at the highest level. We still recall the great trips around the country playing and following basketball with fondness and laughter. We also seek to impart some our learnings from him to our teams in Castlebar. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Michael (Denis) O’ Rourke. As many have mentioned, around the time Michael Jordan was popularizing the sport globally, Michael O’Rourke brought basketball to Castlebar and was one of the key leaders who dedicated an enormous amount of personal time to coaching, organizing, and traveling, ultimately turning Castlebar into a basketball powerhouse. That legacy that lives on today. Michael was also a gifted science and mathematics teacher, combining a deep understanding of the subject matter with a passion for academic excellence. Michael ( Denis ) was a force of nature. Not only was he a great teacher and colleague , he devoted practically all his free time coaching basketball and spent endless hours running the De La Salle Sports Hall in Castlebar for many years. His like will not be seen again.

I had the great privilege of being a colleague of Br Denis in Coláiste Iosagáin in 1968-1969 and our paths haven't crossed since. We had many a night playing solo whist in front of a great fire. He was a fantastic mathematics teacher and his knowledge of maths was extensive. One night I can recall when we argued over whether the degree of destruction ensuing when two cars collided depended on the velocities of the cars or the squares of their velocities. I won't say which side he took. We had other great colleagues there too, Brother Finbar O'Shea and Br Jerome Cooper who passed away in 2017, and many others whose names escape me now. We had fun. Thanks Denis and sincere sympathy to all of the extended O'Rourke family. Ní doigh liom go mbeidh a leithéid arís ann. Slán leat a chara.

Sincere condolences to the O'Rourke family on the passing of Denis.

Denis made an enormous contribution to Castlebar through his promotion of basketball. From very modest beginnings, he helped build both school and club teams to a level where they were competing at All‑Ireland standard within a remarkably short space of time.

He taught us a lot about sport and brought a fierce determination to win while the game was on, but was always able to move once the final whistle blew, regardless of the result. Denis certainly enriched our lives through basketball, and we're grateful for the knowledge, time, and energy he gave willingly over the years.

My condolences to all of Michael’s extended family. We knew Michael as Brother Dennis during his time in Castlebar. Basketball was a fringe sport in the town before his arrival, but through his commitment and love of the game, participation grew enormously and is still going strong today.

He was a legendary basketball coach. We enjoyed great success at both school and club level, and he consistently coached his teams to be among the best in Ireland. I’m grateful to have known him, to have learned from him, and to have been coached by him. Sending love to all of his loved ones.

It was all about hardwork and teamwork, he started the town league and went all the way to the National league with many of the same players.
