I recall many happy occasions in Derby when as many people have said Michael lit up a room with his laughter and sense of humour. The funeral Mass was a wonderful and fitting tribute to Michael and it was indeed a privilege to have known him.

So sad Michael has passed away - our condolences to Colette and family.Micheal kindly invited us to the "clan" when we arrived in Derby 35 yrs ago.His generosity of advice and professional support for medical colleagues was profoundly respected.His patients held him in the highest regard and he was cherished for the great bonds he had established with them.His medical and practical advice was highly valued by friends,colleagues and patients.Michael was entertaining at every event we can recall and his flow of energy at a party was endless.He loved a political or medical spar after a few pints and his verbal stridency was boundless.His charm, wit, good humour,cheerfulness, generosity, great rapport...was endless.It was a wonderful pleasure to have known Michael and shared family celebrations over the years and we are sure he would not object to us saying. "He was a great character".

Dear Colette and All the Family,
We feel unbelievably sad at Michael's passing but at the same time so lucky, privileged and fortunate to have known him for so many years and to be able to call him our friend. He was the most caring of doctors and human beings and hugely respected by his patients, staff and peers. The day lit up when he came into the surgery and you didn't have to hear or see him to know he was there as his presence was so strong. His wit and laughter were infectious and his stories legendary. Even after he retired from Derby he was often part of our daily lives; if unsure about what to do do someone would say " what would Michael do now ?".
It's the saddest of times but we take great joy and comfort in having being a small part of his life, being able to call him our friend and to know that he is no longer suffering. His life is a true celebration.

Many years ago, Michael rang me up in work and offered me a job with him out of the blue when I was working in the UK. I hope he realised how tempted I was by his offer which his gentle generous kind nature made so attractive. I asked his advice about taking his offer or returning to Wexford. His answer was to return to Wexford as his offer was always open. Years later he came to work with us in Sunnyside. His warm calm nature and exceptional skills were much admired by us and our patients. I can only sympathise with you all on the loss of your husband and father. He was an exceptional man. May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.
