Michael was a gentleman who always extended the hand of friendship to everyone.

During my time covering matches for the Mayo News it was always a pleasure to meet Michael in Kiltane.

He extended a warm welcome and was more than willing to assist in whatever way he could.

And I never crossed the Owenmore on the road for home without the mug of tea and Michael wishing me a safe journey.

He was a proud son of Geesala, Bangor Erris and Mayo. The region could not have had a better ambassador.

He left good and lasting impressions on everyone he met. I will always think of him with great fondness.

Michael Goonan was truly a man you don't meet every day.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Michael. I first got to know him many years ago when covering matches for the Western Journal and the Connaught Telegraph. I enjoyed some wonderful nights as guest of Kiltane GGAA Club at their annual dinner dances back in those times.
Big Michael was a towering gentleman in the life of the club and he was a passionate Kiltane and Mayo GAA man. He loved meeting people and had a great ability to remember names and one always felt that homely Erris welcome when in his company.
I had not met Michael for sometime now but the news of his passing brought those memories from over the years cascading back in such a special way. I can still remember his welcoming voice and warm handshake. Rest in peace, Michael. You were a noble son of your beloved Mayo.

He was a True Gentleman and friend to our family. His love of place, Kiltane and Mayo GAA, Sport in general and of course politics was infectious. He alway had a welcome for anyone he met and he knew people from all over the Country, due to the impression Mike made on all of us, once you met him.
He took great joy in young people, hearing them doing well, both here at home and abroad.
I hope you're reunited with all your old Friends.
