As an articled clerk, Mr Gray (as I always referred to him !) was my principal from 1977 to 1982 when I completed training and qualified as an ACA.

Having finished school, at 17 at a time when opportunities were few and far between, Michael provided me the opportunity to pursue a career in Chartered Accountancy.

Given my youth, I know I tried his patience on many occasions but all of my misdemeanours were addressed and dealt by him in a quick-witted straight-forward manner. To tell the truth, I enjoyed any dressing down by him as much as I enjoyed committing the misdemeanour.

Since leaving my employment with him in 1984, I have spent the most part of the interim period living and working abroad.

I can say, without reservation, that Michael remains one of the most decent, thoughtful and professional individuals I ever encountered.

I hope they have not broken the mould because we could all do with meeting a man like Michael Gray, God rest his soul, in our lifetimes.

One of the nicest people to know, a connoisseur of home made apple tart and chocolate cake, but especially a great friend and trusted advisor.

Robert joins me in sending our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Therese, Barry, Simone and all your family on the sad passing of Michael. I first met him in the offices of Eric N Webb around 1970 and he was always charming and sincere. He provided excellent auditing services to Robert's business until his retirement and was consistently friendly and professional. The world will be poorer without him.

Can I offer my sincere condolences to you Therese, Barry, and Simone and all of Michael's grandchildren on the passing of your big lovable husband, father, and grandfather. Michael was unique - as a leader, a club member, and a human being. Never one to have a cross word or a belittling comment, Michael's mission in life was to spread goodwill, kindness, and support to as many people as he could. Gentleman only tells half the story, and the devotion that his close friends displayed, when he started his long journey away from us all, more succinctly reflects the huge love and respect they all had for the man. This love for Michael was also felt by many members in the golf club where he was central to everything good that happened there during his stewardship in 2013. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

I worked with Michael for more than ten years during the 80s and 90s. During that time we spent many hours together travelling to see clients around the country, Galway and Limerick in particular, in his Volvo, no motorways to speak of, listening to Gay Byrne on the radio. I always looked forward to our trips and that time spent in his company. Michael was intelligent, witty, insightful and sincere.
