Mary, Rachel and Ross, we were heartbroken to hear about the sad passing of Michael. He was such an exceptionally joyful, witty, authentic and compassionate person as you so movingly articulated at his funeral. We have very fond memories of our trip to Connemara and our nights out and will miss him dearly. Rest in peace Michael.

Dear Mary, Ross and Rachel. I am deeply shocked and upset to hear of Michael's passing on 31st October, and my heart goes out to you all, and your extended family in this difficult time of deep sadness. Michael was an absolute gentleman, extremely intelligent, highly educated, a brilliant barrister, kind, generous, and with a passion for culture and life.

He was extraordinarily kind and helpful to me and my mother in the last years of his life, demonstrating an exceptional commitment to his professional work, even while he bravely battled with his own illness. Michael had a wonderful sense of humour and he was a great communicator. Integrity, honesty and deceny were hallmarks of his character. I shared a passion for literature with him and I will miss his sharp literary company and insight.

I know he was much loved by his family, friends and neighbours, and that he helped many, many people, not just in the Balbriggan area, but in the whole of North Dublin, and beyond. May he rest in peace. God bless you Michael, and thank you. Jonathan Barry, 31 Castilla Park, Clontarf, Dublin 3.

I was shocked to hear of Michael's death and wish to extend my sympathy to his family. I have great memories of Michael when we were students of town planning in our younger days, and later as our paths crossed from time to time. I recall that he was always entertaining company.
