Haulie was a legend in so many peoples lives. I had the pleasure of being a neighbour with Miriam being a great friend .As such Haulie and Rita were important people in my life too. It was always so lovely to meet Haulie in Clonlee when I was home on a visit.

Haulie was a huge presence. He was such a proud Kerry man like our own dad. I remember the Saturday morning golf games and the trips to Inchadoney. Mirs Haulie was known far and wide as a gentleman and we all have our own private memories of him that we will cherish.

Haulie and Rita were great pals of our late parents Harry and Mary Gleeson for many years. Haulie and Harry were buddies since their earliest days in CIE. Haulie was a great character who always had a smile on his face.

Sincere condolences to the Lynch family on Haulie’s death.

As a child growing up in in Tralee I often heard of Haulie and his football exploits. My aunt’s husband Jerry Flynn was secretary to John Mitchel’s for 25 years. I was from the Austin Stack’s part of the town.

I remember Haulie’s father standing at the door of his house on Castle Street. He was a loco driver as were three of my uncles.

Then when I went to work in Cork our paths crossed again when he was in the Area Engineers Office.

My wife Mary (nee Cohalan) worked for a while in Cork Goods when Haulie was there.

In the last few years we met at the REST lunches and I know he was particularly proud of the Mitchel’s new grounds in Ballyseedy.

May God have mercy on Haulie’s soul.

I first met Haulie in Mallow during the Beet season in 1955 but I met with him again several times during our lives and most recently a member of the Rest group. He was always good humoured and friendly. He was renowned as THE Irish Rail boss in Cork. It is true to say that Haulie was one of a kind and the world will be a poorer place without him. RIP.

Haulie and Jimmy were so important to my Dad, that growing up I always called them Uncle and was proud to do so. Another member of the wonderful, noble old stock gone. Haulie was one in a million. So sad he is gone but glad too he is once again reunited with his beloved Rita x
