A true gentleman

Deepest sympathy to Mary, Mark, Michael, Trevor & Lorraine on the loss of Michael. We have so many fond memories of him calling to the shop, in my minds eye I can still see him hopping up into the back of the truck to bring out only the best of produce, including times I went out to "annoy" him, making sure Fitzpatrick's was getting his top picks! Between the good produce and his good humoured service, along with our ocassional request for facebook pictures (with lemons for pancake day etc!!) he was bestowed the title of "Our No. 1 Supplier", a name he relished and in truth since his retirement this position has never been filled. Michael you will always be missed.

For as long as I can remember Michael Healy was part of our lives and the growing business of Fitzpatrick's Glounthaune. He first delivered produce around the late 1960's to my parents one roomed shop, but previous to that he had delivered to Penney's shop in Little Island, owned by my grandmother . A formidable woman in her day she would make him turn out the box of apples/oranges onto the floor and count them before parting with her money. He never tired of telling that story and over the years if we ever did get to haggle about prices, his comment would always be "You're worse than Ma Penney." Over the next 50 years until his retirement ,Michael was a constant in our lives, delivering initially every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, but as our business grew that went from 3 days to 6 and sometimes 7. Many a summer Sunday morning I can recall him meeting Martin or myself at Dooley's farm in Riverstown to replenish the tomatoes or lettuce we had sold out of. And never a word of reproach or that we had disturbed his only day off. Michael was so much more than a salesman calling to make a sale. You always knew he cared, it was never just about business with him, he was more like extended family calling to check up on us and our lives. He was witness to our comings and goings ,our ups and downs, our wins and losses. We always looked forward to his visits ,his smiling face and good humour would be certain to make your day even better. Life was never the same when he retired.
