Michael McNamara

Very sincere condolences to Brian, Ray, Ciarán, Enda, Déirdre, Pat, Kevin, Josie, Rita and the extended McNamara families on the sad death of your beloved Michael, RIP..
I was shocked when I heard my old friend's name called out (among other deceased) at a Mass in Comhaltas H. Q., Dublin, on this Saturday night, during the annual Tionóil weekend. I found it hard to accept and particularly when I remembered that the last time I called to Michael's house, he wasn't at home - the dog wouldn't let me get near the door anyway!

I never got to meet Michael afterwards and that makes me sad, because Michael was such a beautiful person - kind, friendly, warm, happy, hugely talented in so many ways, but especially as a musician, composer and a much sought-after adjudicator.

Competitors of all ages loved to be adjudicated by Michael - he was so encouraging, especially to those who weren't 'at the top of the class'. One of my own family had that experience when she was under 12. She came back to her mother in the audience, saying "Mr. McNamara is a very nice man"
and so say all of us.

Deepest sympathy to all of the McNamara family on the passing of Michael. He was a real gentleman and always had kind words when we met at Fleadhanna and other musical events. I remember in particular on one occasion he explained to me the nuances of phrasing in various North Connacht flute styles, a conversation which still has me listening carefully with interest. Deepest sympathies to the extended McNamara family on the death of Michael. A remarkable musician and tradition bearer of an older style of flute playing which he cherished and ensured that it was passed on for posterity. A very quiet and modest man, he was responsible for ensuring that the music of his friend flute player, John Blessing was saved for future generations.
He was highly regarded by musicians in Dublin and his family and grand children give witness to his legacy and love of music.
