I was so sorry to hear of your dear Dad's passing and have been thinking of you all in recent weeks. I'll always remember hearing a beautiful rendition of "Only our rivers run free" around a campfire on Fraser Island, Australia, chatting to the singer I discovered she was your Dad's niece...she did him proud!❤️
I have no doubt Listowel helped give Mickey the send off he deserved, may he rest in peace x

MICKEY.

The Bellanaleck snowstorm was raging
As political storms still blew,
Protestors now tired and ageing
Defeat being now all that they knew.
‘Mid such turmoil a baby was born,
And the hopes were he’d live for to see
A minority not subject to scorn
And a province now bigotry free.

As a grown- man that child of the forties
Good Friday’s Agreement he saw,
With Ulster’s cessation of sorties-
B-Specials replaced by just law.
By then he’d gone south of the border,
To Kerry via Dublin went he
Where songs were now written to order;
Pure culture and no R.U.C.

On the day he heard his Makers voice
‘Twas July the third in twenty five.
“Oh the call? Sure I must have a choice.”
His Heaven he’d picked while alive.
When that day was gone a legend had passed.
His last thoughts before leaving? Let’s see.
Being at rest now and pain-free at last
How about bantering with John.B?

Surely his God has now granted his wish
And perhaps bi-location of soul.
By the Erne his spirit is waiting for fish
The same at the Feale in Listowel.
Exploits of his youth documented
They’re just resting in “Peter … and Me.”
Pain-free now and sadly lamented.
While his spiritual river runs free.

My deepest sympathies to Mickey's family. I lived in Listowel from 1992 to 1995 and got to know Mickey through music. I was a novice musician at the time and he was always so welcoming and patient. We had many an enjoyable night in the Listowel Arms. May he rest in peace.

Many admired him for his genius and his wit, but for me it was the friendliness, kindness and emotional perceptiveness he showed me on many an occasion when I needed encouragement that I will have fondest memories of. His intellect in conversation was as pleasurable as the nights of music he gifted us with, and the colour he provided will be sorely missed. Thank you for all of it, Mickey! There are perhaps about five or six Irish anthems that can be said to be classic. This gentleman wrote one of them, perhaps the best.

Whenever I was in Listowel I hoped to see Mickey MacConnell. It hard to accept that I will never see him again. Always a kind gentleman. His music lives on. My sympathy to his wife and family and to his brothers. A great loss to us all.

I have very fond memories of meeting Mickey in a house on Windsor Road, Rathmines, Dublin 6, which we shared for a time in the early 1970's. I have brilliant memories of the traditional music sessions we enjoyed in that house.
