Deepest sympathy to Deirdre and family on Michael’s passing. He was a wonderful writer and a true friend. We have many happy memories of you both, over the decades in Galway and Mayo. You two brightened every occasion, and deepened it too, with your commitment to art and history. Michael was one of Mayo’s finest writers and historians. We were blessed to know him. RIP

We have just heard the very sad news of Michael's death. We missed his funeral.

Michael was a lovely soul, avuncular, affable, learned, a beautiful writer, immersed in the history of Mayo and, with Deirdre, wonderful and witty hosts. They were each improved by the other.

Deirdre's loss is great. Her loving support for Michael was the mainstay of his life, his sail and his compass.

Michael and Deirdre were so kind and so generous to us. We are in their debt.

Truly, we will not see the likes of Michael again.

"They told me Heraclitus, they told me that you were dead,
They gave me bitter news to hear and bitter tears to shed."

There is some comfort to his readers that Michael's wonderful erudition will live on in his books, including in "The Road Taken", amongst so many others. He has left a great legacy and a great void.

Our condolences to Deirdre. There are no adequate words of comfort or consolation for Deirdre.

We were very sorry to hear of Michael's passing. We have fond memories of regularly meeting him at the Sunday morning mass at St. Marys back a number of years. He always had time to chat with us and our young daughters.

We used to meet him also at the swimming pool in the Castle Leisure & Fitness complex and had many interesting chats with him there.

My sympathy to Michael's family. He was probably my favourite author as a girl; he brought history to life beautifully in The Flight of the Earls and in The Four Masters. I was blown away when someone got a signed copy for me, it escaped my young awareness that such a famous author could, in fact, live nearby!
