So very sad to learn of Michael's passing. I'll always remember him for his kindness and support during my Mondello days. My deepest sympathy to all his family. May he rest in peace.

Condolences go out to all the O'Carroll family at the loss of such a wonderful man. His importance to motorsport cannot be overstated. When we were compiling a video history of the Donegal International Rally we happened across a shot of a helicopter flying very low following a rally car up the Knockalla mountain stage in the early 1970s. Nobody had a helicopter then but he was in it! A man ahead of his time, his personality shone through his work as much by telling the story of the characters and people involved in any sport he covered as through the spectacular images he pioneered in using. So many people in motorsport are indebted to his work and Ireland is a poorer place without him. He will be missed in Donegal and long fondly remembered. Godspeed Michael.

First came across Michael when he gave a masterclass on OB’s during the Producer Director course 1991! We quickly established our mutual Tipperary and Roscrea school connections, but most of all he was a man of humour, passion & decency. I never worked with him directly but every time I bumped into him in the corridors of RTÉ or occasionally outside, you left feeling better to have met him!

I was first introduced to Michael and his beloved and very stylish Phyllis in Dunkerrin, by Louis.
What I remember most was his impish grin which seemed to say… I’m fixing on getting into mischief!!
The lovely photo posted above says exactly that.
Everyone who knew Michael were blessed to have him in their company. He was a natural storyteller but mostly he was a charming gentleman.

Michael took me under his wing in the early 80s and I was honoured to work with him on The Annual over many years and in organising the Irish Motorsport Rally Team trip to Cyprus in 1986. There was always a welcome for this Corkie in Kerrymount Rise and the chats would go on late into the night. Rest in peace my friend.
