I was shocked to learn today of the passing of a and old friend from way back in Dan Ryan times. I travelled a few times to the Continent with him on his trucks.
And we met up again in the pub in London.
My very sincere condolences to you Maureen, and all the family.

Family and heritage is not defined by a name. It is defined by DNA. Being first cousins Mike and I shared not only the Hughes DNA through his mother Brenda and my father Mattie, but we shared a history. We began Shamrock International together. When trucking across the European Continent was a new experience for the Irish, Mike and I began like two explorers finding our way by highway and laneway across mountains using old fashioned maps and the gift of the gab. Those were good times! Exciting times! Those are the colourful memories I have had for decades and those are the memories I have today. It wasn’t all plain sailing, but it was the beginning of our shared growth and our shared love for the unknown.

Today along with those memories I’m thinking of Maureen, Barry, Susie, Edel, Michael, Andrew and Steven in their sorrow. My condolences are heartfelt, and I pray that they find the strength and support to keep them going in the long days and even longer nights ahead.

Our sincerest sympathies to The O' Connell family particularly to Andrew and Stephen who have shared many funny stories with us about their beloved Dad Mike.I have fond memories of guiding Mike in the Adare GAA Oskars when he was proud to be togging out in his Brother in Laws gear as he "said Mass" while on a trailer being towed by Seamus Lynch on a Vintage Tractor .He really knew how to enjoy himself and it was a privilege to be involved in the production of Fr Ted with him .To Maureen and all the family may happy memories live within your hearts forever. Mike will never be forgotten by anyone who knew him.
