Deepest condolences to Betty and family on the passing of Michael. I have fond memories of Michael during Birdie's college years and after. As a friend of Birdie's I was always made feel very welcome to the house in John's Park by Betty and Michael. Michael was always good fun with plenty of stories. May he Rest in Peace.

Very sorry to hear about Dutchy/Michael. He was a kind hearted rock of a man. I went to the house in Ballymacaw in a terrible summer storm in 1970 to tell him his boat in the cove was getting swamped, but he didn't bat an eyelid, knew we couldn't do anything anyway, and just continued gently cleaning oil off a cormorant in the living room. I still have many of his booklets on Waterford wildlife. Thanks, Dutchy, you were an inspiration. Sincere condolences to Betty and all the family.

Sincere sympathy to all of Michael's family. Michael, through his writing about the flora and fauna of Waterford, was a great inspiration and educator for me, and many others. He truly has left an indelible legacy for the understanding of biodiversity and ornithology in Ireland. May he rest in peace.

We are so sorry to hear of Michael's death. Our heartfelt sympathies to you Betty, Paula and Grainne.
We first met Michael ringing gannets on Saltee on the June weekend in 1974 when he looked exactly like the photograph above.
He was a great bird ringer, moth expert, wildlife expert in all things Waterford had to offer. No-one knew the county better.
Himself and yourself Betty were such great company that wonderful holiday we spent with you in Tanzania in 1990 when we had such an exciting bushwhacking safari in the jeep.
He remained a true and generous friend all his life and truly Ni bheidh a leithead aris ann.

Condolences to Betty and family. I have very fond memories of Michael from our time in Mikumi. He was a gentleman who was very generous with his time and had the patience of a saint when teaching us how to play an instrument. RIP

I have wonderful memories of the two years spent with Michael in Tanzania. He so generously gave his time to the Irish children on the project, teaching them with such dedication and patience the tin whistle, sharing his knowledge and allowing them to be part of the bird netting and ringing, in which he was involved. They all loved him.
I have also great memories of our scrabble evenings, card games and his story telling but most of all his kindness. I feel privileged to have known him.

To dear Betty, Paula, Grainne and the extended family, words cannot express how deeply saddened I was whrn I heard about the sad passing of 'Dutchy' as I always knew him. So many memories of him, especially in Ballymacaw, and his wonderful collection of butterflies, moths etc which fascinated me as a child. Meticulously put together, it always held me in wonderment. There are many more happy memories which are too numerous to mention, but they're for another day. Just to say that He was a gentleman in every sense of the word, and I'm sure I speak on behalf of all of us, the 'coastguard station gang' when I say that nobody would have a bad word to say about Him. A life well lived deserves to be rewarded, and Dutchy has earned his reward in the Peace of Heaven. He put in a great shift! Rest in Peace Dutchy. Remembered with Great Fondness 🙏🕊🙏🕊❤️❤️
