I would like to offer you my condolences upon Michael's death. What a terrible shock this must be for you; I am very sorry for your loss. We were colleagues in Saudi Arabia. We were not close friends, but one of Michael's charms was that he took the time to meet people and chat with them; he made an effort to get to know people in his community, and thus I came to know of his brilliance and creativity.
Friends and former colleagues here in Saudi Arabia gathered in front of screens in offices and in apartments to join you via the livestream for the beautiful funeral Mass. We were full of awe and praise for the sensitive way the priest officiated, and we later repeated some of his words to each other. We cried with Michael's brother and said "yes, exactly" as he listed Michael's gifts in his beautiful eulogy. The music was perfect. Many thanks to you, the priest, the musicians, and the parish for the livestream so we could share in mourning for him and celebrate his life.
One personal story - Michael was brilliant and creative; he was also a human being. He and I exchanged some sharp words with each other in the months before he left and thereafter made an effort to avoid each other. In his last days at the university, he happened to pass by a classroom where I was invigilating. He could have kept on walking, but instead he stopped and came to me, hand extended so as to leave on better terms, an act revelatory of his caliber. May he rest in peace.
