My sincere condolences to Michael's family on his passing. He frequently gave me solid advice as I made sales pitches to him in Kerry Group, we had many a laugh. May he rest in peace.

I got to know Michael from visiting Dave and Treasa in Abbeydorney.
The last time I met Michael I happened to meet him in Tralee and I joined him for a walk around the Town Park followed by a coffee in Benners Hotel.
On our stroll in the Park he recited the poem Trees (by Joyce Kilmer 1913) that he had learnt in primary school. I think it is an apt epitaph by which to remember the gentleman the was Michael Rice.

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
