So so sad to hear this. Known Smithy for over 50 years. Such a truly lovely guy. Whenever we met the years just rolled away. We had some great and often funny times when Spud and the Bards came to the UK. We'll never forget you Smithy. Sincere condolences to Jean and your family

I have a lovely memories of many gigs with Smithy, and usually with his son Jody in the same session. He was always upbeat and good craic, I only recollect nice things about him. Condolences to family and loved ones, he was a true gem.

I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of Smithy.
He was one of my earliest musical friends who sadly, I hadn’t seen in a long time. Smithy was always full of positive energy and fun and a great musician too. Many’s the gig we shared in the 80’s with the Rattlers.

Just wanted to add my condolences to Jean and family on the untimely death of Smithy who we all loved and admired so much.

He was a real character, a one-off, with a fantastic sense of humour and a great musician. I met him a number of times over the years before more recently having the great pleasure of playing music with him myself. Our gigs, especially in the Patriots Inn were always enjoyable and a pity we didn't do a few more over the years.

Rest easy Smithy and great to have known you.

We were all profoundly shocked and deeply saddened on hearing the news of Smithy's passing after such a short illness. Smithy was a close colleague, a friend and a long time member of The Bards for over 30 years. He was a very competent musician, reliable and professional and we all have very fond memories of great times on the road sharing his enthusiasm, infectious humour and musicianship.
Our deepest sympathy and condolences to his wife Jean, his sons Jody, Bobby and Mark and the extended Smith family.

I have very fond memories of Smithy touring with Dad in the Bards whilst I was learning to drive and Smithy had to endure the journeys as a brave back seat passenger! We had many a philospohical chat in the early hours coming back from the gigs!! Such a talented musician and such a gentleman. He will be very sadly missed. May he rest in peace.

I knew Smithy through my brother Brian Tyrrell who played music with Michael in the 60/70. I have fond memories of his musical talent his sense of humor and of course that cheeky grin. My heartfelt condolences to his family and to his legions of friends.
