Michael (Sonny) Rooney

Sonny was a lovely lovely man. He taught me sign language when I was a boy. I am so sorry to read of his passing. My condolences.

So sorry to hear of Michaels passing. I had the pleasure of meeting him in St Joseph's House in Stillorgan. He brought fun to the every day. May he rest in peace x

I'm a wee bit heartbroken at the passing of Sonny. I spent many hours signing with him over the years in Bundoran and in Dublin. He was friendly with both of my late parents (Kathleen and Hugh) and they enjoyed his expressiveness and sense of mischief. He was a larger than life character with contagious laughter and energy. He wore the tradition of Deaf story-telling well and managed to communicate with hearing people of all walks of life. He was ready to go, but missed Bundoran, the craic and especially the Atlantic Ocean. His days as a fisherman were his most treasured.
Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann- There'll never be the likes of him again.

I had the honour of meeting Michael during his time at St Joseph’s House in Dublin; he was a charming, funny, stubborn, and intelligent man. He told us of the years he worked hard and how Donegal was always in his heart.

He made me smile many a times, rest easy Michael, you’ll be missed.
