By chance I learnt of the death of Mickey. Mickey's first appointment when he passed out from Templemore was in Julianstown, my home village. He initially had his meals with my family and subsequently moved in - becoming part the family. Long before celebrity status was a thing, Mickey was our local celeb and down through the years we often laughed at the fact the village pub had a lock-in for the locals on a particular Sunday afternoon as he played with his beloved Donegal team and we watched him live on the only coloured TV in the village. The sporadic contact with our family ended when both my parents died in 2018, but the contact was always there. Having moved to the North West 3 years ago, my intent was to somehow try to reconnect with him, alas that now will never happen. To the Sweeney family - I offer my sincerest condolences and perhaps someday our paths will cross when we can reminisce and remember stories of calling to your Mum & Dad, your Mum sending bags of treats back from Letterkenny with Mickey when he'd be home with you all - and him being the big brother I never had. May his gentle soul rest in peace

Sincerest condolence to the Sweeney family and their rxtended families on the sudden, untimely and sad passing of Mickey. One of the great footballers of the great Donegal team that won their 1st ever Ulster senior football championship in 1972 defeating Tyrone in the provincial final in Clones. Mickey was at full forward that went on to play the reigning All-Ireland champions Offally in the All-Ireland semi-final of 1972. Michael also won his 1st Donegal all-county senior football championship with his beloved St. Eunans at the tender age of just 17 in 1969 and followed with another Donegal senior football title in 1972. He is back again with Hannigan, Dodo, Gallagher (James) Hoare and others in Heaven. May you rest in peace legend Mickey.

So very sorry to hear of the sudden death of Mickey who was an absolute gentleman and a great character.We would meet almost daily on our walk up in Glenkeo and talk about the old times in Letterkenny about our times in the Boys school and our times in St Eunans College and all the old characters in the town.R.I.P. It is a long time since the Brothers School in the Sixties Michael was a sound man then and remained so all his life. As fine a footballer as ever pulled on the county jersey but sad to a great career cut short by injury. Shocked and saddened to hear of Mickey passing away. Worked with him in Manorhamilton and Sligo. Enjoyed calling in to station in Doochary for a chat when he was stationed there. He will be missed. Great memories.
