Mortimer (Mort) Hughes

So sorry to hear of the sad passing of Mort. We always enjoyed meeting him at the Joe Mooney Summer School in Drumshanbo. Condolences to Anne, to his sons Conor and Niall, his daughter Meadhbh and extended family. May the good memories you have bring comfort to you all at this difficult time. Rest in peace Mort.

We would like to join in the expressions of condolences to Anne (Connor) and the family on the passing of Mort. He was one noble gentleman and it was always lovely to meet up with Mort and Anne over the years. They were always so supportive of all things "Mayo" from the Mayo Association dinner dances in Dublin to their incredible loyalty to the Mayo teams over the years. Their hearts bled "red and green" and Mort had a great passion for the GAA scene going back to his playing days with Hollymount. He loved his many visits to Hollymount and Barnacarroll and meeting friends and neighbours. The love for the West never waned and he was always content and at peace in the company of the folks from back home. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Rest in peace, Mort.

We watched the funeral Mass online and we share our thoughts on this church service. The Mass was lovely to hear and see the lovely words of care from Anne and the family. Conor, Niall, and family members spoke so lovingly of their father and how they all cared for Mort was wonderful. He must have been a wonderful father.
Anne, you were a wonderful wife and mother. The way you cared for Mort was exceptional. You stood by his side to the bitter end. I remember chatting with you one day about his care you did just about everything for him in his latter months and years. I praise you highly because you deserve the best of praise. You are lucky to have such a wonderful family and no doubt they too will receive exceptional care and help if ever needed.
Mort can now have plenty of conversations with his lovely brother-in-law (the late) Billy. No doubt the main conversation will be about the Mayo football team. There will of course be different viewpoints as one was a player and the other a supporter.
May Mortimer's gentle soul rest in peace.
